As we observe World Suicide Prevention Month, we are forced to look squarely into the mirror of a crisis we often ignore: the silent suffering of those who spend their lives healing others.
Just as a cardiologist can suffer a massive heart attack, healthcare professionals, psychologists, and healers are not immune to breaking down. Humans are not wired to feel nothing, and wearing a white coat or a therapist’s badge does not make anyone bulletproof against the heavy realities of life.
Doctors and mental health practitioners are naturally sensitive souls. By trade and by nature, they are deeply empathetic. Day in and day out, they sit across from pain, absorbing heavy feelings, trauma, and emotional distress from dozens of individuals. But who carries the carrier?
Psychologists, counselors, and physicians have personal lives, personal heartbreaks, and private battles too. The tragic loss of Dr. Hemika Agrawal, a psychiatrist from Ghaziabad, brought this raw truth to national attention. Here was a brilliant professional trained to treat depression, anxiety, and distress, yet she found herself trapped in her own unyielding storm following deep personal trials like her divorce.
Was it that she wasn’t a good doctor? Absolutely not. The tragic reality is that she likely struggled to cope with her stress or perhaps more importantly, she did not receive the support system she desperately needed. Her story highlights a glaring truth: this was not a failure on Dr. Hemika’s part, but a failure of the safety net and community around her.
In our approach to mental wellness, we often separate the physical from the psychological, or rely too heavily on one-dimensional fixes. From a clinical perspective, therapy without medicine is often half-treatment, just as medicine without active emotional processing is incomplete.
- Medicine creates the vital biological environment in the brain, stabilizing neurotransmitters so that healing becomes possible.
- Actual healing, however, happens when we face our buried emotions head-on. It requires releasing cognitive errors, detoxing the mind, utilizing breathwork (pranayam), meditation, yoga, energy healing practices, and intentionally rewriting neural pathways.
Mental and physical health is your individual responsibility, which means recognizing when the weight is too heavy to carry alone. It means discarding the myth that seeking help is a weakness.
If you are a professional, a caregiver, or someone going through a tough season: You need to be open, and you must ask for help.
Conversely, if you are looking at someone who appears done, quiet, or uncharacteristically low, do not wait for them to cry out. Proactively identify the signs and extend support. Check on your strong friends. Check on your doctors, your therapists, and your colleagues.
